I always challenge myself not to start our monthly blog with any reference to the weather, but alas once again I will fail. My interest in what the weather is doing and how the grass is growing has been developing at an unhealthy rate over the last few years and those two things usually dictate the whole farming calendar for us. This time last year the drought was beginning to set in, but as I write this (in the middle of June) it was a hat and coat commute across the fields to work, dodging the floods as I go. As long as the weather behaves and returns to summer sun again I shall be very happy as the fields look lush and the cows happy.

Last month we finished calving with 23 little Hereford calves now bouncing around the field. They and their mums were also joined by Noah our pedigree Herford stock bull last week who will be looking forward to a long summer with his herd. The site of the herd out enjoying the grass growing at their feet certainly brings a feeling of contentment for us farmers.

This month in the shop we have had an exciting delivery of new fridges and freezers. Our old ones had been patched up one too many times and with the new space, we hope to be bringing you more delicious local and homemade goodies in the coming weeks.

Next month we also have a great event at Neston, our sister farm shop. Little Farmer’s Fiesta returns on the 14th of July from 10 am. Meet baby farm animals, bouncy castle, storytelling, tractor rides, Wild Woods, face painting, crafts and of course food from the Big Green Egg. Entry is free but some activities will have a small cost. It will also be best to book in advance for our tractor rides, which can be done in our shop or call 01225 700881.

All the best

Tom
